Karcher K 5 Premium Review: 2,000 PSI, 1.4 GPM Pros and Cons

The K 5 Premium is best at frequent, lighter cleaning where convenience and motor life matter more than raw flow: weekly car washes, patio furniture, grills, siding, fences and decks.

• Motor life. A water-cooled induction motor runs cooler than the universal motors in most budget electrics, which is why Karcher positions it for longer service.
• Pressure control without swapping tips. The Vario Power wand twists to lower pressure for cars, siding and wood, and the Dirt Blaster wand concentrates the spray for grime on concrete and masonry.
• Tidy storage. The onboard pressurized hose reel keeps the 25 foot hose wound instead of in a tangle on the garage floor.
• Easy soap. The removable detergent tank with a flow dial meters how much cleaner goes on, useful for cars and siding.
• Right-sized pressure for common surfaces. Cars clean at 1,200 to 1,900 PSI, vinyl siding at 1,300 to 1,600 PSI and wood decks at 500 to 1,200 PSI, all within reach of a 2,000 PSI machine turned down.

The biggest drawback is flow for the price. At 1.4 GPM it moves only slightly more water than a Sun Joe SPX3000 at 1.2 GPM, and about 70 percent of the Greenworks 3000 PSI brushless electric's 2.0 GPM, even though the Greenworks costs about the same or less. Concrete driveways clean best at 2,500 to 3,000 PSI with about 2.3 GPM or more, so on a two-car driveway the K 5 is slow, and a surface cleaner will not perform well at its flow.

What you pay extra for is the induction motor, the reel and the wand design rather than cleaning speed. The listing also omits the power cord length, the machine weight and the warranty, and the Dirt Blaster's rotating jet needs the same caution as a 0 degree tip: keep it off wood, siding and vehicles.
