Mowers
Mowing Time Chart: Hours by Lawn Size and Mower Type
Quick answer
A 21 inch push mower cuts 0.36 acres an hour, so 1 acre takes about 2 hours 46 minutes. A 42 inch lawn tractor does the same acre in about 46 minutes and a 54 inch zero-turn in about 25 minutes. Hills and trees add 20 to 35 percent.
Mowing time comes from three numbers: lawn area, effective cutting width and ground speed. Everything below is calculated from those, with a 15 percent pass overlap and an efficiency allowance for turns and trimming, so the chart agrees with the mowing time calculator exactly.
If the time in your row looks unacceptable, the fix is almost always a wider deck and a faster machine. Our top pick for cutting a big lawn down to size is the Husqvarna Z254F at $3,985.00, which cuts 2.41 acres an hour.

How long does it take to mow my lawn?
Open, fairly flat lawn at 80 percent efficiency. Find your mower down the left, your lawn size across the top.
| Mower | Acres per hour | 0.25 acre | 0.5 acre | 1 acre | 2 acres | 3 acres | 5 acres |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21 in push, 2.5 mph | 0.36 | 42 min | 1 hr 23 min | 2 hr 46 min | 5 hr 33 min | 8 hr 19 min | 13 hr 52 min |
| 21 in self-propelled, 3 mph | 0.43 | 35 min | 1 hr 9 min | 2 hr 19 min | 4 hr 37 min | 6 hr 56 min | 11 hr 33 min |
| 22 in self-propelled, 3 mph | 0.45 | 33 min | 1 hr 6 min | 2 hr 12 min | 4 hr 25 min | 6 hr 37 min | 11 hr 2 min |
| 30 in rider, 4.5 mph | 0.93 | 16 min | 32 min | 1 hr 5 min | 2 hr 9 min | 3 hr 14 min | 5 hr 24 min |
| 42 in lawn tractor, 4.5 mph | 1.30 | 12 min | 23 min | 46 min | 1 hr 32 min | 2 hr 19 min | 3 hr 51 min |
| 42 in zero-turn, 6.5 mph | 1.88 | 8 min | 16 min | 32 min | 1 hr 4 min | 1 hr 36 min | 2 hr 40 min |
| 48 in zero-turn, 6.5 mph | 2.14 | 7 min | 14 min | 28 min | 56 min | 1 hr 24 min | 2 hr 20 min |
| 54 in zero-turn, 6.5 mph | 2.41 | 6 min | 12 min | 25 min | 50 min | 1 hr 15 min | 2 hr 4 min |
| 60 in zero-turn, 6.5 mph | 2.68 | 6 min | 11 min | 22 min | 45 min | 1 hr 7 min | 1 hr 52 min |
Cutting speeds are typical while mowing, not transport speeds. Bagging adds roughly 20 to 30 percent for stops to empty.
How many hours a season is that?
| Lawn and mower | Per mow | 26 mows | 32 mows |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 acre, 21 in self-propelled | 35 min | 15.2 hr | 18.7 hr |
| 0.5 acre, 42 in lawn tractor | 23 min | 10.0 hr | 12.3 hr |
| 1 acre, 42 in lawn tractor | 46 min | 19.9 hr | 24.6 hr |
| 1 acre, 54 in zero-turn | 25 min | 10.8 hr | 13.3 hr |
| 2 acres, 54 in zero-turn | 50 min | 21.6 hr | 26.6 hr |
| 3 acres, 60 in zero-turn | 1 hr 7 min | 29.1 hr | 35.8 hr |
Most cool-season lawns are mowed 26 to 32 times a year. Warm-season lawns in long-season regions can run higher.
How much does terrain add to mowing time?
| Terrain | Efficiency | 21 in self-propelled | 42 in lawn tractor | 54 in zero-turn |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open and fairly flat | 80 percent | 2 hr 19 min | 46 min | 25 min |
| Hilly | 65 percent | 2 hr 51 min | 57 min | 31 min |
| Lots of trees and beds | 60 percent | 3 hr 5 min | 1 hr 2 min | 33 min |
Trees and beds cost proportionally more on big machines, because a wide deck cannot use its width between obstacles.
How is mowing time calculated?
Three steps, and they are the same ones the calculator runs:
- Effective width in feet = deck inches x 0.85 / 12, allowing a 15 percent overlap
- Acres per hour = mph x 5,280 x effective width x efficiency / 43,560
- Minutes = acres / acres per hour x 60
The speeds are the ones this site uses everywhere: 2.5 mph pushing, 3 mph self-propelled, 4.5 mph on a lawn tractor and 6.5 mph on a zero-turn. Measure your lawn first with the lawn size calculator, because most people overestimate their mowable area once the house, drive and beds come out.
What is the fastest way to cut mowing time?
- Move from walking to riding. This is the biggest single jump: 1 acre falls from about 2 hours 19 minutes to about 46 minutes, roughly 40 hours back over a 26 mow season.
- Move from a tractor to a zero-turn. Same 42 inch deck, 46 minutes down to 32, because of speed and turning in place at row ends.
- Stop bagging. Mulching removes the emptying stops and returns nitrogen to the lawn. A mulch kit such as the Husqvarna HU42 costs $44.95.
- Sharpen the blades. Dull blades tear grass and force slower passes. A set of 48 inch mulching blades is $31.95.
- Reduce the lawn. Beds, mulch and ground cover permanently remove mowing. See how to mulch landscape beds.
Which mowers hit each time target?
If you want a 1 acre lawn done in under half an hour, you need a zero-turn. Under an hour, a 42 inch rider will do. Full picks are in the best zero-turn mowers and self-propelled mowers.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to mow 1 acre?
About 46 minutes with a 42 inch lawn tractor, 32 minutes with a 42 inch zero-turn and 25 minutes with a 54 inch zero-turn. A 21 inch self-propelled walk-behind takes about 2 hours 19 minutes. Add roughly 25 percent for a hilly acre and about 35 percent for an acre with many trees and beds.
How long does it take to mow 2 acres with a zero turn?
A 54 inch zero-turn at 6.5 mph mows 2 acres in about 50 minutes, a 48 inch takes about 56 minutes and a 42 inch about 1 hour 4 minutes. Those figures assume open ground. On a 2 acre lawn with mature trees and beds, plan on 20 to 35 percent more, so 60 to 75 minutes is realistic.
Is a zero turn really faster than a lawn tractor?
Yes, typically 30 to 45 percent faster with the same deck width. A 42 inch zero-turn cuts 1.88 acres an hour against 1.30 for a 42 inch lawn tractor, because zero-turns cut at higher ground speeds and pivot at row ends instead of making a loop. On slopes the gap narrows, and a lawn tractor is the safer choice on grades.
Does bagging add much time?
Yes. Bagging adds roughly 20 to 30 percent to a mow once you count stops to empty the collector, and more in spring flush growth or heavy leaf fall. Mulching keeps you moving and returns nitrogen to the soil. Bag when the grass is overlong, seeding weeds or matting, and mulch the rest of the year.
How many hours a year do people spend mowing?
A half acre lawn with a 42 inch tractor is about 10 hours over 26 mows. A 1 acre lawn with the same tractor is about 20 hours, and the same acre with a 54 inch zero-turn is about 11 hours. Two acres with a 54 inch zero-turn comes to roughly 22 hours a season, which is where a robot mower or a wider deck starts paying for itself.
