EGO Z6 ZT4204L Review: 42 in Electric Zero Turn Pros and Cons

The ZT4204L is best at mowing a flat 1 to 2 acre lawn quietly and with almost no routine maintenance. An electric zero-turn uses battery-powered motors to drive the wheels and blades, so there is no engine oil, air filter, spark plug, fuel stabilizer or pull cord.

• Rated range that matches most lots. Four 10.0Ah batteries are rated for up to 2 acres per charge, and EGO says adding batteries extends that to 3, 4 or 5 acres.
• Fast turnaround. The included Z6 wall charger refills all four batteries in about two hours, so a mow interrupted by low charge can resume the same day.
• Driver modes. Standard, Control and Sport modes on the LCD let a nervous first-time driver start slow and a confident one mow at up to 8 mph.
• Battery sharing. The 56V ARC Lithium batteries also run EGO handheld tools, such as the EGO Power+ LB7654 765 CFM Blower Kit with 5.0Ah Battery blower.
• Quiet running. Early morning mowing is realistic without waking the street.

The biggest drawback is that the 2 acre rating is a best case, and running out mid-mow means a wait. Range ratings assume dry grass at normal height; thick spring growth, wet grass, bagging and slopes all draw more power. If your lawn is right at 2 acres, plan on some mows taking two sessions, or budget for extra batteries.

The second drawback is the build at this price. The 42 inch deck is stamped steel rather than the welded deck on the similarly priced Husqvarna Z242F Special Edition 42 in. Zero Turn Mower, and bagging requires the separate EGO POWER+ ABK4200 Bagger Kit for 42 in. Z6 Zero Turn kit at $516.00. The pricier EGO POWER+ Z6 ZT4214L 42 in. Electric Zero Turn Mower adds a wide frame for balance on slopes and deck suspension, which tells you what the entry model leaves out.

• You want to stop storing gasoline and servicing an engine.
• You already own EGO 56V tools or plan to.
• Noise matters: early mornings, close neighbors or a home office.

Skip it if

• You mow more than 2 acres in one go; the Greenworks 60V MaximusZ 54 in. Electric Zero Turn Mower is rated for 3.5 acres, or buy gas.
• You let grass grow long between mows, which cuts range.

• You mow steep or often wet slopes.

Warranty: the listing does not state the warranty. EGO publishes separate terms for the mower and its batteries and charger; the sibling EGO POWER+ Z6 ZT4214L 42 in. Electric Zero Turn Mower listing states a 5-year mower warranty, but confirm the ZT4204L terms with EGO before you buy and register the mower and batteries.

Certification: battery mowers have no engine emissions certification. The listing does not state a UL, ETL or CSA listing, so look for a safety certification mark on the charger and battery labels, and use only EGO's charger.
