The Z242F Special Edition is best at mowing a 1 to 2 acre lot with obstacles quickly while still fitting through a garden gate and into a garage bay.

• A welded 42 inch deck. Many 42 inch mowers use stamped decks pressed from one sheet of steel. A fabricated (welded) deck is built from heavier plate and resists damage from roots and bumps.
• Kawasaki V-twin power. 21.5 HP across two blades is plenty for a 42 inch cut and runs smoother than a single-cylinder engine.
• Hydro-Gear EZT transmission. A named, integrated hydrostatic transaxle, so you know what you are buying and what a dealer will service.
• Range for a big mow. A 3.5 gallon tank covers a 2 acre mow with fuel to spare.
• A stated warranty. The listing states 3-year consumer coverage, which many listings in this class omit.

At 6.5 mph a 42 inch deck covers about 1.9 acres per hour, so 1 acre takes about 32 minutes and 2 acres about 1 hour 4 minutes.

The main drawback is that the 42 inch deck and EZT transmission set a ceiling. Above about 2.5 acres, a 42 inch cut starts to cost real time: 3 acres takes about 1 hour 36 minutes, against 1 hour 15 minutes on a 54 inch deck. And the Hydro-Gear EZT is an integrated residential transaxle, not the heavier serviceable ZT-2200 on the Husqvarna Z248F 48 in. Zero Turn Mower or the ZT-3100 on the Husqvarna MZ61 61 in. Zero Turn Mower with ROPS, so it is built for typical homeowner hours rather than long weekly mows on big properties.

It also costs close to the 48 inch Z248F. If your gates allow 48 inches, compare the two carefully before buying the smaller deck on price alone. And like every zero-turn, it is a poor choice for steep or often wet slopes.
