Patriot CSV-2515 Review: 1.5 HP Electric Chipper Shredder, Pros and Cons

A wood chipper cuts branches into chips with blades, while a shredder breaks leaves and soft debris into smaller pieces. The CSV-2515 does both in one frame, and it is best at steady, quiet processing of the prunings a typical suburban or small rural property produces.

• No engine to maintain. Patriot describes the motor as quiet, smooth and maintenance free. There is no fuel to stabilize, no oil to change, no spark plug and no carburetor to drain before winter.
• Fine chips for beds. Coin-sized chips spread evenly as mulch around shrubs and paths, which is the main reason to chip rather than haul brush away.
• Leaves and branches in one machine. The large top hopper takes leaves, so fall cleanup and spring pruning both go through the same unit.
• Working close to the house. An electric motor produces no exhaust, so there is no carbon monoxide concern when you chip next to the garage or under a window.
• The right branch range for pruning. Hedge trimmings, fruit tree prunings and ornamental limbs are mostly under 2 inches, comfortably inside the 2.5 inch rating.

The honest weakness is price for capacity. At $1,495.00 it tops out at 2.5 inch branches, while the gas Champion 3 in. chipper shredder ($605.99) and the SuperHandy 3 in. chipper ($535.29) both take 3 inch branches for far less. If you only chip small prunings occasionally, the corded WEN 41119 ($91.98) handles 1.75 inch branches for a small fraction of the cost.

The second drawback is the cord. You work within reach of an outlet, and the listing does not state the motor's voltage, amperage or the extension cord gauge it needs, so read the manual before planning a spot at the back of the property. The listing also does not publish a feed rate or bag capacity, so there is no manufacturer number for how much brush it clears per hour.
