WEN SB209E Review: Budget 24 in Two-Stage Gas Snow Blower

Getting a household off the shovel and into two-stage capacity for the least money. The feature that matters most for the price is the 20-inch intake. That is the same intake class as machines costing twice as much, and it is what lets a 24-inch machine take the ridge of packed snow the plow leaves at the end of the driveway. Single-stage machines at this price top out around 10.5 to 13 inches.

The rest of the spec sheet covers the basics that a first snow blower should have: electric start so you are not pulling a cord in the cold, self-propel with reverse so you are not pushing a heavy machine, and a chute clearing tool in the box so nobody is tempted to use a hand. Because it is a two-stage design, it can also work on gravel with the skid shoes set correctly.

For a 24 by 24-foot driveway it needs about 15 passes and 8 minutes of moderate snow at a steady walking pace, exactly the same as any other 24-inch machine. Clearing width, not brand, sets clearing time.

The 30-foot rated throw. The PowerSmart 26 lists 45 feet and the EGO SNT2405 50 feet. On a narrow driveway that barely matters, but on a wide one, or late in a snowy winter when the banks along the edges are high, snow that lands short piles up where you will have to clear it again. Plan to throw in shorter arcs and to the downwind side.

The second drawback is the budget build. WEN does not list heated grips, headlights or a remote chute deflector, and owners commonly mention that assembly and cable adjustment take time. Parts and service support are thinner than for Honda, Ariens or Briggs & Stratton-powered machines.

Stock can also be a factor. The listing has shown a future availability date rather than immediate shipping, so order well before the first storm.

• Your driveway is wide or long and throw distance matters; see the PowerSmart 26.

• You want no gas at all; the EGO SNT2122 suits short paved driveways.
• Your driveway is steep and icy, where a wheeled budget machine struggles.

Work it out from the width you have to clear. When you clear a driveway from the center outward, the farthest the snow has to travel is roughly half the driveway width plus a margin to clear the bank at the edge.

• Single-car, 10 to 12 ft wide: snow travels about 6 to 12 feet. 30 feet is plenty.
• Two-car, 20 to 24 ft wide: about 12 to 20 feet including the bank. 30 feet is enough in dry snow; wet snow falls shorter.
• Three-car or with a turnaround, 30 ft plus: 20 feet or more before banks build. A 45 to 60-foot throw helps.

Rated throw distances assume dry, light snow and a clear chute. Heavy, wet snow can land well short of any machine's rating. Plan your clearing pattern so the wind carries snow away from the driveway.

WEN's listing states a two-year warranty. Register the machine and keep the receipt, and read the manual's warranty section for what is excluded, commonly wear parts such as shear bolts and scraper bars. Gas engines sold in the US must carry EPA emissions certification, and in California CARB certification; check the label on the engine.
