Husqvarna Automower 420iQ Review: Wire-Free 1 Acre Robot Mower

The 420iQ is best at keeping an open, gently sloped lawn of up to about three quarters of an acre mowed with almost no setup labor.

• No boundary wire. Map the lawn by driving the mower with your phone, and change zones later without digging.
• Widest adjustable cut range. Husqvarna lists 1 to 4 inches, which suits both tall cool-season grass and shorter warm-season turf.
• Built for American lawns. Larger wheels and a durable bumper for crossing paths and driveways, and the body is hose-washable.
• Patterns and control. Random, striped or checkerboard patterns, schedules, cut height and software updates in the app.
• Support and warranty. A 4-year warranty, a year of free blades and a US-based support hotline.

The biggest drawback is the one every satellite-positioned robot shares: it needs a reasonable view of the sky. Under dense tree canopy, tight to a tall house or in a narrow side yard, positioning accuracy can degrade and the mower may pause or skip areas. Second, the 45 percent slope rating (about 24 degrees) is modest next to all-wheel-drive rivals. The Mammotion LUBA 2 AWD 3000X Robot Mower is rated for 80 percent. And the 1 acre rating is a maximum; size your lawn to 70 to 80 percent of it, so the practical fit is about 0.7 to 0.8 acre.
